Visa Fees Explained

How visa fees work

Where visa fee money goes

Last checked 19 October 2026

Visa fees mainly pay for processing and the wider immigration system. The US says its visa charges are set from the measured cost of consular services Source 1. The UK says fee income supports a self-funded migration and borders system, with some charges set above processing cost Source 3. The European Commission says Schengen application income is put into more processing resources, including staff Source 4. The exact use depends on the law and fee type.

The short answer

A visa fee is not one global charge. Each government sets its own application, issuance and related fees under its own law. The official records for the United States, United Kingdom and Schengen area use three models: measured service cost, income for a wider immigration system, and a common fee reviewed against inflation and public salaries Source 1,Source 3Source 5.

A high fee does not show that an application will be approved. It pays for a process or legal function. The US fee schedule calls the application charge non-refundable, and UK guidance says the application fee is paid during the online process Source 2,Source 6.

United States: service costs

The State Department said when its nonimmigrant fees changed on 17 June 2023 that it uses activity-based costing to calculate the annual cost of consular services. It said nonimmigrant visa fees are based on the actual cost of providing those services Source 1.

On 19 October 2026 the official schedule listed US$185 for B visitor, F student and other non-petition categories. It listed US$205 for petition-based work categories, US$315 for E visas and US$265 for K visas. The schedule describes these application processing charges as non-refundable Source 2.

The Department's visa manual says most consular fees cover the cost of processing an application or providing a named service. It separates the application fee from a reciprocity fee that may be charged when a visa is issued Source 7.

United Kingdom: the wider system

A Home Office equality assessment published on 19 September 2023 said immigration fee increases were intended to raise income for financial pressures across the migration and borders system. It described a policy of moving that system toward greater self-funding and reducing reliance on taxpayer funding Source 3.

This means a UK visa price can be higher than the estimated administrative cost of processing that exact application. The Home Office publishes the current fee table and separate guidance on payment, identity checks and possible extra costs Source 6,Source 9.

Schengen area: common fees and reviews

The Schengen Visa Code sets the common short-stay fee. Its consolidated text requires the European Commission to assess at least every three years whether the amount should change. The assessment uses factors that include EU inflation and the weighted average salary of Member State civil servants Source 5.

When the adult fee rose from €80 to €90 on 11 June 2024, the Commission said application income would be put into more resources, including staff for processing applications. It linked the change to a goal of shorter appointment waits Source 4.

What your payment does not buy

  • It does not buy approval. The decision still follows the immigration rules Source 2,Source 6.
  • It does not make an optional appointment service compulsory. UK guidance says most centres have free appointments and that paid optional services do not improve the chance of success Source 6.
  • It does not remove a separate lawful charge. A reciprocity fee, health surcharge, biometrics fee or application-centre fee may apply in addition to the visa fee Source 2,Source 6Source 7.

Common questions

Do visa fees only pay for the officer who reads my file?

Not in every system. The US bases charges on measured consular service costs Source 1. The UK says fee income supports the wider migration and borders system Source 3.

Why can two visa categories have different fees?

Governments may measure different processing costs or set different amounts in regulations. The US official schedule uses separate prices for non-petition, petition, E and K categories Source 2.

Does paying more improve my chance of approval?

No. UK guidance says optional paid services do not make an application more likely to succeed Source 6.

How often can Schengen visa fees change?

The Commission must assess the need for a change at least every three years under the Visa Code Source 5.
